Late spring and summer are wildflower season in the Balkans, and every hike in the mountains brings a bouquet of colour. Wild orchids carpet the meadows, blue forget-me-nots dot the slopes, and pink gentians climb straight up against snow-capped peaks. Seen from a distance the meadows look subtle; up close they're intense, every blade humming with bees and every flower peeking out from beneath its neighbour. The Balkans is a region that never needed to re-wild, because so much of it has never tamed in the first place. Because the Balkans span such a range of elevations, you can chase the bloom for months, starting low in spring and following the flowers uphill as summer arrives. As a rule, May is best for wildflowers on the lower valley slopes, while June and July bring the real spectacle to the high alpine meadows above 1,500m, right through to carpets of white edelweiss on the highest pastures. We've picked out 7 of our favourite hiking routes across seven Balkan countries where the trail and the wildflowers are equally good reasons to go — led by the Balkans' flagship long-distance trail, and running from Albania's Accursed Mountains to Bulgaria's Pirin and North Macedonia's Pelister; all of which feature on our hiking holidays. It's no surprise wildflowers are woven so deeply into Balkan culture. They flavour age-old recipes and home remedies, and lend their names and colours to national symbols — the Bosnian lily among the best known. Bosnia and Herzegovina on an Undiscovered Balkans road trip across the countryside: instead of doing the classic Sarajevo to Mostar route, we opted to stay in towns like Konjic and Blagaj, all the while driving through mountains and along brilliant blue rivers. Adventure 1: Tjentište Spomenik, hiking in Sutjeska National Park It's hard to describe just quite how magnificent the Tjentište Spomenik is, both viewed from a distance and up close. It's a spangling white-and-dark mass of concrete, full of sharp brutalist edges and hidden sculptures, that melds with the mountains behind it. It's the most dramatic monument I've ever seen. Read on to see what's around the monument... Sutjeska National Park sits in the heart of the Dinaric Alps, and the Tjentište War Monument is about as dramatic an introduction to it as you could get. The monument itself, those two enormous concrete wings rising out of the valley floor, stands against a backdrop of the Maglić and Volujak massifs, with the Perućica primeval forest just to the north, one of the last remaining primary rainforests in Europe, and the turquoise Sutjeska River cutting through the gorge below. Here's our response: The recent wave of protests, in Albania and also Serbia, have been peaceful, youth and civil society-led protests aimed at infrastructure issues, and halting billionaire-backed projects from destroying nature. In Albania, there are no riots — the point of these protests is they are peaceful. Most days, you will just see crowds of people walking through the city together, holding placards, their kids, or even an inflatable pink flamingo. Families bring their children and set up street crèches. It's colourful, environment-focused and many people bring cardboard flamingos or blow-up ones as the protest symbol. The Flamingo protest is actually something you might find inspiring to see on our Albania holidays, although we hope for a swift resolution preserving Albania's rich natural heritage (please sign and share the petition). Cool Concrete: Yugoslavia's Extraordinary Abstract Monuments Scattered across the mountains and national parks of the former Yugoslavia — in countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia — are hundreds of striking brutalist monuments. These are Spomeniks: abstract brutalist monuments commissioned during Yugoslav times to honour WWII's fallen. Some look like gigantic fists, alien spacecrafts, or wings in flight. All are extraordinary. Spomeniks are most often found 'in the wild': buried in forests, rising out of national parks, and squatting on mountain peaks. This is one of rare instances where nature adventure lovers and architect enthusiasts combine: each masterpiece of brutalism can be reached on a Balkan hiking holiday or road trip. Their striking futuristic designs have several explanations: after the war and the establishment of Yugoslavia in 1963, Tito had to forge a united country from a federation that included multiple religions and ethnicities. Architects and sculptors were briefed to create something that would not offend the different sides. Instead of war heroes, neutral abstract designs were chosen, aligning with modernist trends of the 1960s to 1980s. Of the thousand-plus former Yugoslav spomeniks that once existed, only a few hundred remain. Some are well maintained, with museums and parks attached. Others were destroyed during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s; or were vandalised, forgotten, or reclaimed by nature. Some have been stripped to their concrete skeletons, like the Monument on Mount Makljen (Tito's Fist). A comprehensive Spomenik database was created in 2016 by Donald Niebyl which documents every monument of the region. The below routes are all found on our Bosnia holidays: Bosnia's best mountain hikes Maglić Peak, Sutjeska National Park Bosnia's highest summit, Maglić (2,386m), sits within Sutjeska National Park, a vast protected landscape of sharp limestone ridges and dense forest. The hike typically starts in Prijevor (1,659m), one of the most untouched areas of the national park. It is a flower-filled meadow but soon gives way to scree, so take care on this section - you may have to scramble a little. From here it's a 90-minute hike to Trnovačko Lake, a heart-shaped lake like a jewel below Mount Maglić, Bosnia’s highest peak (although it's technically in Montenegro). The last section passes through meadows again before climbing steeply towards the summit ridge. Maglić itself means 'Misty mount' in Bosnian/Montenegrin. On a clear day, the views sweep across Volujak, Bioč, Zelengora and the shining Trnovačko lake. Under the paranoid dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, the country was sealed off from the world and obsessively fortified against imagined invasion. Between the 1960s and 1980s, an estimated 173,000 to 750,000 were constructed, giving Albania he highest concentration of Cold War bunkers anywhere in the Balkans – and arguably the world. These surreal mushroom-shaped domes were designed so that every citizen could, in theory, help defend the country.
