7 Day Family Adventure Holiday in Montenegro

“We had the most amazing family holiday which totally exceeded our expectations. Ana was the best tour guide that we could have ever wished for…the kids loved her. They have created such a great program for families to enjoy Montenegro’s mind-blowing scenery, with a fantastic range of activities that were safely run and suitable for the whole family. Truly memorable!” Arina Mulji, August 2023

Day 1 – Arrival and boat trip at Lake Skadar

Transfer to Virpazar (arrivals from other locations are at an extra charge). Lake Skadar is one of five national parks in Montenegro and the largest wetland in Southern Europe. Its tranquil waters, waterlilies, reeds and rushes offer a natural preserve for 270+ bird species: binoculars are essential! After check-in to our accommodation, we’ll take a private boat to enjoy the views and swim.

Car time: 2 hours. Accommodation: Lake View Apartments, Virpazar or similar.

Day 2 – Canyoning at Rikavac

The cool rushing water of Rikavac Canyon is the perfect antidote to a hot summer’s day, while the ravine itself is just the right level of excitement for beginners, younger children and any wild nature lover! We transfer to the start point by car and spend the next 2 hours bouldering through this stunning natural playground. Be prepared for rock scrambling, jumping into deep natural pools and abseiling down rocky cliffs (the highest is 10 metres!). Wetsuits are provided as well as experienced, certified local guides.

Buzzing from our adventure, we’ll come down to visit nearby Stari Bar, an ancient ruined fortress city near the Adriatic Sea. We’ll enjoy a lunch of local delicacies and afterwards perhaps visit one of the oldest olive trees in the world or jump in the sea before heading back to Virpazar!

Canyoning time: 2 hours. Car time: 50 mins – 1.5 hours each way depending on traffic. Accommodation: Lake View Apartments, Virpazar or similar.

Day 3 – Kayaking on Lake Skadar

Today we transfer to the high mountains, but not before getting in a little adventure in the form of a short kayaking trip up the Morača delta. Make sure to pack up before breakfast, ready to head out for two blissful hours of kayaking, river swimming, rope swimming and a picnic at a secret riverside spot in the willow forest. Young ones will dunk themselves in hundreds of times while everyone will chat and chill in beautiful natural surroundings. By early afternoon, we’re on our way to Camp Grab – a long but stunning drive!

Kayaking time: 2 hours. Car time: 5 hours. Accommodation: Camp Grab (dinner around 9 pm, Montenegrin eating schedule).

Day 4 – White-water rafting, Tara river

Time to visit the Tara Canyon for one of the most popular activities in Montenegro – whitewater rafting. The Tara is the longest Montenegrin river, flowing through Durmitor National Park down to the Bosnian border. Because of its untouched nature and amazingly high rocks above (the highest point of the canyon rises more than 1,300m above the river), it became part of UNESCO World Heritage.

The total length of the rafting route is roughly 7 km, from Brštanovica to Grab (the most attractive rapids on the entire river!) and it lasts around 2.5 hours, including some nice breaks for swimming in icy-cold river waters (don’t worry, we provide wetsuits!) and a lunch break. On the way back we’ll enjoy the view over Piva River Canyon, and beautiful Piva Lake, visiting one of the highest dams in the Balkan Peninsula.

Rafting time: 2-3 hours. Car time: 20 minutes. Accommodation: Camp Grab.

Day 5 – Durmitor National Park

A more relaxing day! After a 9 am breakfast at the camp, we take a stunning drive down the Piva Canyon and on, right through the centre of the UNESCO heritage site, Durmitor National Park, to our accommodation at Zabljak. The scenery is as epic as it is astonishing!

We have the option to stop on the way to enjoy Piva Lake by boat and SUP board (1.5 hours at additional cost). Otherwise, it’s straight on for a picnic in the hobbitesque landscape and gaping at the famous mountain views and wild horses.

If there’s time once we reach our next destination, Žabljak, we’ll visit one of the biggest natural attractions in all of Montenegro – Black Lake. Regarded as the most beautiful of 18 glacial lakes in this area, fringed by black pine forest, we’ll also have a chance to visit on our last day if that works better for the group.

Car time: 2.5 hours. Accommodation: Calimero Apartments or similar.

Day 6 – Dragišnica Valley Walk

We promise a different activity each day and today it’s hiking! Your tour leader will help the group decide on the exact tour depending on variables like weather, group ability and preferences, but it is likely to be one of the following:

  • Dragišnica Valley Hike: suitable for cooler days and keener hikers, this 5 hour mostly downhill yomp passes through an astonishing valley situated under (unofficially) the longest single piece of rock in Europe – Boljska greda, more than 2.5km long and on average 900 metres high. If it’s late summer, forage wild strawberries and blueberries by the path.
  • Jablan Lake hike and swim. This stunning glacial lake in the foothills of mountain peak Crvena Greda takes just an hour to reach by foot. It passes through fairy-tale pine forests and pastures with abundant wildflowers. Take a dip in the exhilaratingly cool waters before enjoying a picnic and returning the same way.

After our hike, we’ll journey to the mysterious Devil’s Lake where the legend of its namesake will be revealed. Then, we’ll marvel at the ancient stećci cemetery – a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site filled with medieval tombstones from the Bosnian empire and beyond. It’s a day of history, adventure, and natural beauty that you won’t want to miss!

Car time: depends on the hike agreed, but it shouldn’t be longer than 40 minutes each way. Accommodation: Calimero Apartments or similar.

Day 7 – Zip-lining the Tara Bridge

After all your activities, it’s finally time for a slightly more relaxed day, and time to visit the Tara once for an optional “flight” over the world’s second-deepest canyon! The zip line is one of the longest in Europe and a real must-do for even the most junior thrill-seekers! Want something more challenging? How about conquering a Via Ferrata? 10 minutes away from Sedlo, at the very heart of the National Park Durmitor, this iron ladder takes you up the massif of Uvita Greda at an altitude of over 2000m and is available as an optional extra for €70pp.

Car time: depends on your choice, but it’s max. 1 hour each way. Accommodation: Calimero Apartments or similar.

Day 8 – return to Podgorica (other destinations would incur an extra transfer charge)

Prices are in £ Sterling per person and include all transport, all activities, all accommodation, all meals and all guiding. Airport transfers excluded unless from Podgorica.

Book by 1st March 2024 and get a £50pp discount!
