Kayaking holiday at Lake Skadar

“Five stars…this was a magical week, suspended between the water and the sky. Gigo is a superb guide and we all enjoyed talking to him about his beautiful country.” Angela Maclean, July 2018

2021 departure dates: April – October (Sunday to Sunday)

We are offering to pay 50% of all mandatory PCR tests between Montenegro and your country of residence! Read our Covid policies here!

We love paddling on Lake Skadar – so to encourage more of this awesome, low-impact activity, we are proud to launch a kayaking/canoeing week that is suitable for pretty much every age and level of experience! The week includes 4 guided kayaking or canoeing excursions that take you from secluded birding channels to serpentine rivers, from hidden island monasteries to glorious open water under the gaze of the Prokletije mountain range, and unlike our tougher paddling weeks, this is a single-centre holiday, with each evening spent in charming, comfortable accommodation in

Virpazar, gateway to Lake Skadar National Park. The excursions are gentle and perfect for novices and families in particular.

Book to Give Back – every booking sparks a donation to our chosen local environmental and community causes!

Equipment: We supply all boats (Z-Pro Tango inflatable kayaks) and safety equipment.

Your Tour Leaders:
Gigo is one of Montenegro’s most experienced & talented kayakers. When not organising the annual Kayakfest on the Tara River, he takes guests paddling where no other has paddled before! Gigo is a fully qualified ECU guide and speaks fluent English + Montenegrin/Serbian. Ben is one of the founders of Undiscovered Montenegro, and as well as being a BCU-qualified kayaking coach, was the first paddler to put Lake Skadar on the map as a kayaking destination! He speaks fluent English and Montenegrin/Serbian.

Day 1 – Arrival
Arrival at Virpazar from your arrival airport and a short transfer to your accommodation. In the evening we will have a tasty dinner where everyone can get to know each other a bit better.

Day 2 – Island monasteries tour
This 4-5 hour kayak trip will take you across stunning mirrored waters from Murići on the southern shores, (also home to the lake’s best freshwater beach), with views up to the fabled peaks of Albania’s Accursed Mountains. You’ll have the lake all to yourself as you swim in crystal clear waters and visit the lake’s renowned 14th-century island monasteries, all the while taking in the awesome views, varied bird life and glorious solitude. Paddling distance: 9km. Packed lunch included.

Day 3 – Virpazar – Raduš
This trip is a lovely paddle from the lilypads and rushes of Virpazar to the old island prison of Grmožur, known as Montenegro’s Alcatraz. We then continue down the coast to the beautiful hamlet of Raduš, the deepest point of the lake, where locals Danilo and Lidija will prepare a delicious fish lunch for you! It’s also a great spot for a swim, with loads of opportunities for those who like jumping or diving into water from a stone jetty (1-8m heights!). We then round off the day with a visit to the secluded Pješačac beach, from where you will return to Virpazar via Landrover! Paddling distance: 12km

Day 4 – free day
Chill out, explore the local area – or we can help you organise another land-based activity!

Day 5 – kayaking the Morača Delta
This is a circular paddle through the renowned bird reserves of Manastirska Tapija and the Morača Delta. We circumnavigate the island of Vranjina via its picturesque river channels before visiting the Saint Nicholas monastery and returning to Vranjina via the delta, stopping off for a picnic lunch at a charming spot with a diving platform and rope swing. May/September paddlers remember to bring binoculars for the outstanding bird life!  Paddling distance: 11km

Day 6 – The majestic serpentines of Pavlova Strana
An incredible guided paddle from the picturesque villages of Karuč to Rijeka Crnojevića via the birding hotspot of the river Karatuna (May/September paddlers remember to bring binoculars for the outstanding bird life!) and the stunning serpentine channels of Pavlova Strana, one of Montenegro’s most famous vistas (it’s that mountain with the river running around it). It’s a long paddle, but it’s the absolute highlight of our week, with ever-changing vistas and all the time in the world to lazily finish in a charming local village for some well-deserved drinks and return to Virpazar by Landrover. Paddling distance: 18km. Picnic lunch included.

Day 7 – free day
On the first free day, we can help you organise any number of non-paddling activities – or you could just chill, relax, and enjoy some fine dining and wine!
