7 Day Hiking Holiday in Serbia’s East – NEW FOR 2026!
“The Eastern Serbia hiking trip was a wonderful experience: an uncrowded variety of landscapes layered in history, beauty, and culture. Aleks, our guide, was delightfully personable, knowledgeable, interesting, and accommodating. Together with Philomena, the week was extremely well coordinated and organized to get the most from each day.” Elizabeth Gollub, September 2025
2026 departure dates: May-October (Saturday to Saturday) min. 2 persons – Book before 30th November for a £150pp discount

Eastern Serbia is a region of quiet beauty and rugged charm, where nature still feels wild and history runs deep. With its dramatic gorges and mountains, winding rivers, and hidden waterfalls, the landscape is perfect for hiking and slow, immersive exploration.
While a few landmarks—like the Iron Gates or Golubac Fortress—are known, much of the region remains well off the radar for most travellers. Tourism here is still light, meaning you’ll often have the trails, views, and villages all to yourself. It’s a part of the world that feels like it’s just waiting to be discovered—ideal for those who like being a little off the map!
This 7-day adventure blends active hiking with other forms of exploration, including a boat trip and sightseeing, offering a balanced way to experience as much as possible of this remarkable and still largely hidden corner of the world.

Your country experts
Aleks and Philomena are a brilliant Serbian/Australian couple who have been leading groups around Serbia for years. We’ve teamed up with them to offer you a brilliant week-long activity holiday exploring one of Europe’s most underrated countries. They speak fluent English and Serbian.
Day 1 – Arrival
We depart Belgrade in the morning, heading for our accommodation for the next two nights—a small, family-run guesthouse perched on the edge of the Danube River. The scenery is breathtaking, and today you can choose to do as much or as little sightseeing and activity as you like. Talk to us about the options!
Overnight in Zeleni Zaliv.
Day 2 – Veliki Štrbac Peak hike (+optional Danube cruise)
After a hearty breakfast at our accommodation, we set off at 9am for a day entirely devoted to exploring the beauty and mystery of the Danube River. Our journey begins with a scenic half-hour drive along the river itself, getting us in the Danube mood before our hike to Veliki Štrbac, the highest peak of Miroč mountain, at 768 metres. Over the next 7-8 hours, we’ll trek through pristine forest trails, pausing at various lookouts that offer ever-expanding views of the river far below.
At the summit, we’re rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the Danube in its most dramatic form: the Veliki and Mali Kazan, or “Large and Small Boilers.” Here, the river churns and swirls between towering cliffs, creating the illusion of boiling water, a natural spectacle that gives the Kazan its name.
Hike notes: Medium-challenging trail (16 km. 7-8 hours)
OPTIONAL BOAT TOUR: For some extra afternoon sightseeing we will switch from boots to boats and head out for a spectacular Danube River cruise, seeing some of the unique sights of this part of the river including Decebalus’ Rock Carving – A 40-metre-tall face carved into the cliffs, honouring the last king of Dacia, facing off symbolically with Roman history across the river. Extra cost: €30pp.
Overnight in Zeleni Zaliv.
Day 3 – Transfer to Stara Planina
Today we make our way to Stara Planina (“Old Mountain” in Serbian) a vast and rugged mountain range that stretches over 550 km across eastern Serbia and into Bulgaria. This remote and little-developed region offers a rare glimpse into a slower, older way of life in the Balkans. Scattered stone villages, traditional farming practices, and untouched nature make it feel as though time has paused here.
We’ll be on the road for around five to six hours, but we’ll break up the journey by visiting Vratna Kapija, two massive naturally occurring stone bridges and the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Gamzigrad – once the location of the ancient Roman complex of palaces and temples Felix Romuliana, which was built by Emperor Galerius. As we pass through town of Pirot this evening there will be time to stop and explore a little and enjoy a meal at a local restaurant. (Own arrangements for dinner – and we have an excellent recommendation!)
Overnight at Motel Vrelo.
Day 4 – Hiking Tri Čuke
Today we head deep into the heart of Stara Planina for a memorable hike to Tri Čuke (The Three Peaks), which rise to 1,937 metres.
We’ll begin the journey with a 4×4 drive through the village of Dojkinci, next stopping to admire the picturesque Tupavica Waterfall. From there, we’ll continue through the remote, forested region of Arbinje, and make various stops along the way to enjoy unique natural attractions and viewpoints – about 2 hours of sightseeing.
Next, hiking to Tri Čuke (The Three Peaks) – a rewarding trail with a mix of wide-open ridges, alpine meadows, and sweeping mountain views. The trail itself is half forested, half along mountain ridges, and follows the borderline with Bulgaria – the perfect way to experience the wild beauty of this lesser-known corner of Serbia.
Hike notes: Approx. 16km. Hiking 7-8 hours.
Overnight at Motel Vrela
Day 5 – Scenic Highlights of Stara Planina
After breakfast at our accommodation, we’ll head out for a relaxed day of sightseeing, with two gentle walks offering some stunning views around Stara Planina. We will use our driving route today to move us to our next overnight base.
– Goat’s Rock (Kozji Kamen) – a short hike (approx. 8 km return) to a dramatic viewpoint with sweeping vistas over Zavojsko Lake.
– Bigar Waterfall – one of the region’s many picturesque karst waterfalls, followed by a visit to the 13th-century Orthodox Monastery St. Onufrija (approx. 2.5km return walk). Dinner tonight will be at our accommodation – Hotel Stara Planina – plus you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the pool and wellness centre!
Overnight at Stara Planina.
Day 6 – Midžor Peak
Another one of Serbia’s classic peak hikes – but today we’ll be hiking to Midžor, Serbia’s highest peak at 2,169 metres. The trail offers a steady, manageable ascent, making it accessible to most hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. As we reach the summit, you’ll find yourself right on the border with Bulgaria, rewarded with sweeping views across both countries and the valleys stretching out below. This is an out-and-back hike along the same trail, covering approximately 16 km in total. If we’re lucky we’ll get to see some of the wild mountain horses that the area is famous for.
Hike notes: Elevation 700m. 16 km return trail.
Overnight at Stara Planina.
Day 7 – Return to Belgrade
Today we say farewell to Stara Planina, taking with us memories of this magical and unspoiled mountain region. We’ll make the four-hour drive back to Belgrade, with a stop for lunch along the way. Once we arrive, we’ll check into our lovely, centrally located B&B accommodation before heading out to explore the charms and layered history of the former Yugoslav capital on a guided walking tour.
The tour finishes in Belgrade’s famous bohemian quarter, where your guide Aleks will point you to the best spots to enjoy your final evening in Serbia—complete with warm hospitality, traditional music, and delicious local cuisine. It’s the perfect way to round off a week full of nature, history, and the people who make Serbia such a truly unique destination.
Overnight in Belgrade.
Day 8 – Transfer to Belgrade Airport
The next day, your guides will ensure you’re at Belgrade Airport in good time to make your flight home.
