Day 1 – Arrival

Upon arrival at Sofia Airport, a transfer will take you to your accommodation. Dinner and group briefing in the evening. Overnight in Vitosha district.

Day 2 – Ascent of Cherni Vrah

There is no other European capital like Sofia that has such a high and beautiful mountain in its immediate vicinity. Climbing the highest peak of Vitosha is the first day of our adventure. We will start from the area of the “Aleko” hut (1810 m above sea level), which we will reach by car. On the way to the top, there are spacious views of Sofia and Stara Planina, and from the very top – to the highest mountain on the Balkan Peninsula – Rila. The route follows dirt roads and well-trodden paths through the high, exposed part of the mountain. The slope is moderate, without difficult sections.

Duration of the trek: 3-4 hours. Ascent/descent: 500/500 m.

Overnight in Vitosha district.

Day 3 – Boyana-Bosnek Mountain Biking

This and the next day we will pass a part of the route of the “Vitosha 100” race. It is so-named because it makes a 100-kilometre circuit of the Vitosha mountain around Sofia. We will start from the capital district of Boyana and our final destination for the day is the village of Bosnek. We will move in the low part of the western and southern slopes of Vitosha through forests and open terrain with many ascents and descents on a variety of surfaces – paths, dirt, stony and asphalt roads.

Length of the trek: 37 km. Ascent/descent: 900/600 m.

Overnight in Vitosha district.

Day 4 – Visit to local hot springs / free day

Today we have the chance to choose from half-day hiking in the area or a free day with mineral hot water springs [we need more information here about the options and the springs].

Overnight in Samokov.

Day 5 – Horse-riding in Plana Planina

It’s time for a new and different way of exploring nature! Plana is one of the many mountains around Sofia. It offers softer terrain, ideal for horse riding. We will ride among meadows, coniferous and deciduous forests, we will enjoy the wonderful views in all directions – to the west Vitosha, on whose slopes we spent the previous three days, to the south – the huge massif of Rila.

Duration of the ride: It depends on the desire and capabilities of the participants.

Overnight in Samokov.

Day 6 – Kayaking on Iskar Dam

Today we will exercise other muscles, enjoying kayaking in the calm waters of Iskar Dam, the largest in Bulgaria. It supplies water to the capital Sofia, and it is filled by the rivers of the Rila mountain, whose peaks are an impressive decoration of our today’s adventure. We will paddle in its bays and cross it to the opposite side, along whose shores we may be lucky enough to see animals from the local game farm.

Duration of kayaking: It depends on the desire and capabilities of the participants.

Overnight in Samokov.

Day 7 – Mount Rila 7 lakes hike

On the last day of our adventure, we will finally come face to face with the mountain mentioned so many times in this program – Rila. It is the highest mountain on the Balkan Peninsula, its peak Musala is 2925 m above sea level. However, we will not go to it, but to the most emblematic and one of the most beautiful areas – that of the Seven Lakes. Located in a terrace from 2100 to 2530 m above sea level, they are the most loved, most visited and most photographed natural beauty in all of Rila. We will first take a lift to the starting point and then take the trails up to each of them. There are steep and eroded sections, but overall the hike is easy.

Duration of the trek: 5-6 hours. Ascent/descent: 450/450 m.

Overnight in Vitosha or Sapareva Banya
